Interview of Steven Obeegadoo in today's L'express : «Ena bann nouvo chatwa»

A reply :
We have to put a stop to their inexact and flawed arguments on the Covid measures

Our criticism of Budget measures !

Some of the Govt people, and the new chatwas, seem to be irritated by our criticism of some budget measures . There have been some accusations that many of us derive a “kick” from the clickbait of our social platform exerting a disproportionate and undeserved influence over shaping, or rather distorting, the national narrative.

La grogne de la rue : À la sauce FMI! ( Newspaper version)

(Published in L'express  25 June 2025)

This is what happens when a  Govt, his ministers , senior and junior,  are more interested  in their usual show in National Assembly then engaging in a permanent dialogue with LePep…a LePep, used to the past ten years of cheap populism and welfarism, who is likely to be easily unsettled by rapid social change and bold reforms .

Budget 2025-26: High on promises, low on reforms

 Published in l'express June 2025

It’s not a Budget for this fiscal year, for the short term; it’s rather a vision statement, without implementation plans, but with the promise of possible attainable goals not before 2035 at the earliest. It lacks the foundation to build a bridge to the future and contains too many gaps to ensure a safe and solid path to a better future.

The Chagos deal: Mts - An ally of western powers

After a six-month absence, bogged down by the FCC’s investigation on the seizure of Rs 113.8 million in foreign currency from Josian Deelawon and Chandradeo Oomah on February 15, the former Prime Minister, used the Chagos deal for a come back on the political scene. He declared that if he were Prime Minister, he would not have signed the new deal on the Chagos archipelago. For him, the agreement that has just been signed has several disadvantages for the Mauritian state and the Chagossian people. “After going through the new agreement, I was saddened to see that the government of Mauritius did not negotiate in the interest of the republic. They have destroyed the good work we have done. Zot pe koz manti”, he says.

Convoluted arguments, analytically flawed !

I was a mere puppet , I just followed instructions !

Rajiv Servansingh, ex-CEO of State Trading Corporation (STC), was heard again at the headquarters of the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC). Rejecting any irregularity in the award of the Rs 30 billion oil contract to Mercantile & Maritime Group (MMG), he asserted that he had merely carried out the decisions of STC's Board of Directors. The FCC has been scrutinizing potential links between the former STC boss and MMG director Kareena Neisius, to determine precisely what role he might have played in the awarding of this colossal contract. For his part, Rajiv Servansingh maintains that he has nothing to reproach himself for.

Was BAI a “disaster waiting to happen”?

Goldfinger coming back from hibernation has affirmed that BAI was a “disaster waiting to happen” …He accused the BAI group of having ‘plundered investors’ and asserted that he believes that Dawood Rawat's demand for Rs 100 billion will not be met. Trusting the justice system, he argued that Rawat would not be fortunate enough to get even ‘one rupee’. On the contrary, he said, the government should ask him to pay back the money spent to save the country.

Pada’s henchmen!

Pada will surely go down in our short economic history as the champion of crony capitalism and nepotism and hailed as the master of financial fraud and corruption; he may be leaving his mark as one among the most corrupt Finance Ministers the country has ever known. (As corrupt as some previous ones , the ones viewed as trojan horses of the private sector dutifully carrying out the agenda of their backers and sponsors).

Le backlog de Sithanen !

The Governor of the Central Bank, at a ceremony marking the migration of ABCB Holdings to the official market of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, was harking back again on the ‘extremely difficult’ monetary legacy left by the previous administration. He was referring to the printing of Rs 186 billion, divided between the government (Rs 93 billion), the Mauritius Investment Corporation (Rs 81 billion) and four state-owned companies (Rs 12 billion).

The Governor and the Politician !

A central bank governor needs a degree of reserved communication to maintain credibility, avoid over-promising, and ensure effective monetary policy implementation, as over-communication can lead to "signal extraction problems" and undermine policy credibility.

Sithanen’s unconvincing intervention on Radio Plus

Much of what Sithanen mentioned in his intervention is already public knowledge -the money transferred from BoM’s capital reserves for the repayment of Govt’s external debt, the transfer of Rs 60 bn to Govt , the MIC transfer of Rs 25 bn to Govt, dressed up as an investment in Airports Holdings Ltd, a state-owned company, which enabled Govt to pay off Air Mauritius creditors, the recourse to central bank deficit financing , the imprudent fiscal management, and the manipulation of GDP and Budget figures & so on- due to the efforts and articles of some top economists while our Sithanen was either advising the Govt on helicopter money or hibernating ….it seems that it’s now that he is finally beginning to wake up to the enormity of the economic devastation caused by our Pada.

Quel Culot !

After the arrest of the Gooljaury brothers, what’s making the headlines is the shocking revelation by the PM in his parliamentary reply that the MSM government has squandered a whopping 110 million dollars  (with annual maintenance costs of 7.5 million dollars and  evidence of over-billing ) on purchasing highly sophisticated equipments for state  surveillance of the entire nation.

An independent audit and evaluation of Airport Holdings Ltd (AHL) !

Now that things seem to be stabilising at MK following its Annual Meeting of Shareholders and the appointment of a temporary Managing Committee with executive powers pending the nomination of a new Chief Executive Officer, ( as in the pre-2014 days waiting for NCR to come out of his proverbial lethargy and now familiar equivocation ), it’s time now for the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius to ask for a full audit of AHL, which has not yet published its audited financial accounts since its setting-up in August 2021.

Clawing back: The deep reforms and restructuring the country needs !

There couldn’t have been a better reply to the ex-PM's Christmas and end-of-year message than Manou Bheenick’s assessment of the State of the Economy -the “rampage of dilapidation and depredation that we have suffered from the claws of the kleptocrats who have brought the economy to ruins”- in his MT interview of the 27th December.
