The abolition of ‘lifelong privileges’ granted to former prime ministers and presidents, was among the commitments announced by Sébastien Lecornu upon his arrival at Matignon. As of 1 January 2026, the drivers and security officers assigned to these former politicians will be withdrawn.

On the occasion of the MMM's end of the year reception at Domaine Anna, the DPM delivered a short but quite sharp and fiery speech , taking stock of 2025 challenges and achievements and earmarking 2026 as a pivotal year for Mauritius, for several key institutions in the country , for the fight against corruption (no more of by-catch deals !) and for the MMM. He also emphasised that his Govt has succeeded in putting the economy back on track.

There were a few good suggestions- in line with what we have been recommending in these very posts- the need for a full-time finance minister (and a new team at the Ministry of finance), less of nominations bidons meaning -the right skills for the right jobs, ....

During the French President’s visit this week, the issue of our sovereignty over Tromelin must be raised . We have always maintained that any agreement on the co-management of the island with France should not prejudice our claim of sovereignty.

ReA dots the “i”s on electoral reforms !

Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) has sent a letter to the leaders of the Labour Party, the MMM and the New Democrats requesting discussions on the way forward in particular on constitutional reform, legislative changes in favour of workers and environmental commitments.

On electoral reforms, which he considers to be overdue, Stefan Gua of ReA points out that several issues remain unresolved, notably the introduction of a degree of proportional representation and the principle of the right to recall. ReA has always campaigned for all citizens to be able to stand as candidates without having to prove their communal affiliation.

That goes much beyond the “pretence” of an electoral reform ( avek so best loser system intact) that the PTR and the MMM are proposing , which is supposed to be one the reasons for the new episode of the on/off saga -an ongoing mimicry .

Day by day they are confirming that they are not the changes LePep had projected.

The Key Rate remains unchanged at 4.5% !

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank has unanimously decided to keep the Key Rate unchanged at 4.50 per cent per annum.

In our present conditions, changing the Key Rate is going to have a limited impact. Why?

In Dec 24, the Ministry of Finance published a "𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒚"(SOE) document, which found that GDP data was grossly exaggerated, notably “𝙗𝙮 𝙖 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙂𝙤𝙫𝙩”. The SOE revised GDP data downwards by Rs 21 bn (3%) for 2023 and Rs36 bn (5%) for 2024, and Statistics Mauritius (SM) has since decreased GDP further by an additional Rs5 bn for both years.

The VAT registration threshold, now set at Rs 3 million compared to Rs 6 million previously, which will bring many small businesses into the indirect taxation system, will have a negative impact on micro-businesses.

Our local politics does not churn out politicians that are unencumbered by ego or designs on high office.On the contrary it breeds large egos who run the country and institutions like personal fiefdoms.

Our Sithanen is one of them who basks in the sunshine of their bloated egos. - “Ou dejà truv dimoun met Sithanen dehors ou ?”

Lately, every time the ex-FS, Ali Mansoor, the Governor's chum, opens his mouth, he happens to surprise us by the vacuity of his response, by the hollowness of his arguments/suggestions.

Yes, it is true that this Govt has inherited a dire financial legacy from the catastrophic MSM regime, but LePep is disappointed in how the Govt has governed thus far- its nominations “bidons” , its painful budget, its lack of communication and solidarity with LePep, the incongruous interventions of its Ministers and MPs on radio channels ( Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful, The Minster of Financial Services Jyoti Jeetun and MP Ram Etwareea for e.g ) , the double standards of “ser sintur” , more of the same with the blunders of the novices and a party headed by grandads (feathering their cronies, “Pitis” & “Gendres” nests), with their old-fash­ioned way of think­ing and a min­is­terial team widely seen to be under­per­form­ing.
