Following the barrage of criticism for his persistent refusal to respond to the repeated calls for a forensic audit of MIC, preferably by an international consultant, coupled with expert advice on restructuring this distressed fund, Sithanen as a face saver ,in double-quick time, announces that BoM is hiring a consultant to clarify the links between Silver Bank and MIC. (sic)
We are being told that “ cette nouvelle mission … pourrait permettre d'améliorer la transparence autour de la MIC, entité créée pour soutenir l'économie mauricienne en période de crise, et de la Silver Bank, impliquée dans plusieurs transactions jugées suspectes.”
Is this a joke , another gimmick from our Governor-the Trojan horse of the private sector- which is raising apprehensions about the power of money politics, as many MIC beneficiaries are known to fund all political parties?
This is not what LePep is calling for !
LEPEP WANTS FIRST OF ALL THAT THE GOVERNOR RESTORES THE AUTHORITY OF THE BOM AS AN INDEPENDENT INSTITUTION AND A THOROUGH FORENSIC AUDIT OF MIC TO SHED LIGHT ON THE BIGGEST FINANCIAL SCANDAL THAT MAURITIUS HAS KNOWN SINCE INDEPENDENCE.

I have known Mr Damodaran whilst I was at the central bank. He is a very capable technical person. He would certainly deliver what is expected of him. However, the objectives of the enquiry as well as his terms of reference must not be ambiguous. In a democracy, full transparency and accountability to the people of the Republic of Mauritius is required because it is about spending public money. The central bank has to make the ToR public .

I don’t understand why we need a foreign consultant to shed light on the relations between MIC and Silver Bank. What is so mysterious that we need foreign lens to see through? Who received funds from MIC- the bank itself or its shareholders for investment in related companies? If the MiC cannot identify the legal entities that are the ultimate beneficiaries of its investment, what kind of risk assessment framework does it have? It’s better to close that shop. I am afraid some kind of cover up might be under way to save MIC from trouble.
