I came across this caricature below. I was thinking of drafting some thoughtful comments to accompany it. However, this extract from Paul Lismore’s article “WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR RAMGOOLAM TO UNDERSTAND THAT HE SIMPLY CANNOT GO ON LIKE THIS?” perfectly fits the bill and sends the right message.

Avinash Ramgotee was found dead on 15 August 2026 in his cell at Melrose Prison. Initial findings suggest an alleged suicide by hanging. In the aftermath of the budget, the Banking Act was amended on 31st July 2026 to discharge a bank or other financial institution from the strict duty of confidentiality in disclosing customer information to the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC). A financial institution is now required to provide customer information to the FCC, without the requirement of a Judge’s order, in compliance with “an order or notice under the FCC Act 2023”.

Political influence often creates massive roadblocks for investigators.

Yes, it depends on the quantum of growth and the inflation rate!

Growth could be lower, and inflation could be higher, in which case the BRP/GDP ratio will not be decreasing.

The Prime Minister and Minister of Finance stated in Parliament recently that the removal of the means-testing of the State Age Pension, after being announced in the Budget Speech, implied higher expenditure of about Rs6.2 bn for the fiscal year 2026-27, representing 0.7% of GDP. The budget deficit, including higher pension spending, and exclusive of the uncertain receipt of Chagos rental income of Rs10.6 bn, would thus stand at around Rs48 bn, or 5.7% of GDP, compared to a deficit of Rs41 bn, or 5.4% of GDP in 2025-26.
