𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡-𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐌𝐌-𝟏𝟓 !

They are showing their true colours .

You recall the years of persecution of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) by the Labour Party government, often referred to as les ‘années de braise ‘ for the party, which primarily took place between 1968 and 1976. During this time, the ruling Labour Party, led by Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), imposed a state of emergency to counter the growing influence of the newly formed MMM, which had gained significant traction among the youth and trade unions.

The repression by the Labour Party was aimed to stop the MMM from undermining its dominance in the post-independence era, particularly in urban areas.

Are we seeing more of the same kind of repression from the MMM-15 to prevent the MMM-3 gaining a strong foothold among LePep who is undergoing a period of significant economic, social, and political strain, characterized by deep-seated discontent with the government and a rapid erosion of public trust?

“Vrai Sanzman” is turning up to be - nominations bidons, corruption and governance concerns, economic management failure and the absence of solidarity with LePep by cutting back on their own privileges and perks which often serve as a symbolic or practical gesture of shared sacrifice, particularly in the present times of economic austerity.

Recent examples of some varied approaches to this solidarity from politicians, ranging from the abolition of long-term perks to voluntary salary cuts:

𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that "lifelong" benefits for former prime ministers, including generous perks and police protection, will be abolished as of January 1, 2026.

𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚: Parliament has engaged in steps to cut down on the privileges of former presidents, with a bill tabled in August 2025 to curb perks. Previously, a law providing pensions to Members of Parliament was scrapped.

𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tightened travel rules for federal politicians and their families, limiting partner travel to within their local electorate and restricting reunion flights for relatives to economy class.

𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚: President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a 20% pay cut for himself and the Deputy President, with a 10% reduction for cabinet ministers, while also restricting foreign travel for officials.

𝐅𝐢𝐣𝐢: The government proposed a 20% pay cut for ministers, assistant ministers, and MPs.

Uteem justifies the witch hunting by arguing that the elected representatives in question, having been elected under the MMM banner as part of an alliance, can no longer continue to serve as representatives of the party.

But the “Alliance du Changement” was forged mainly by the leaders , NCR and ton Paulo. Paradoxically, together with the drive for our ‘Viv Ensam’ , we also abide to identity politics and vote for the leader who promotes and defend “Us” against “Them”, making us feel more secure, fighting for our vested interests . Thus the elected representatives owe part of the votes to that leadership based on identity politics .

Thus his arguments are only partly true , the witch-hunting is not justifiable.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞!

The World Bank's Macro Poverty Outlook (MPO) analyzes macroeconomic and poverty developments in 147 developing countries. The report is released twice annually for the Spring and Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The MPO consists of individual country notes that provide an overview of recent developments, forecasts of major macroeconomic variables and poverty during 2024-2026, and a discussion of critical challenges for economic growth, macroeconomic stability, and poverty reduction moving forward.

The WB MPO for Mauritius was released this month for the ongoing IMF/WB Spring meetings. The growth rate for Mauritius in 2026 is estimated at 2.5%, compared with the Statistics Mtius forecast of 3.0%, and the IMF forecast of 3.1%. Inflation in 2026 is forecast at 3.9%. The WB fiscal forecasts are on a calendar year basis, and 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝟕% 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐃𝐏. 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟗𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐃𝐏 𝐛𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

The concluding para of the MPO makes a direct reference to the risk of a sovereign credit downgrade:-

Risks are heavily tilted to the downside. If prolonged, the conflict in the Middle East could weaken external demand and dampen investor sentiment, while the accompanying rise in oil prices risks further raising air fares and production costs, eroding export competitiveness, adding to inflationary pressures, and offsetting earlier gains in poverty reduction. Additionally, lower than expected tax revenue and delays in pension reforms or in the ratification of the Chagos Islands agreement could slow fiscal consolidation. The war in Iran has added to the difficulties of our SMEs, already burdened by rising labour costs, electricity bills and bank charges, coupled with high interest rates, a severe shortage of foreign currency and increased competition from dumping and imports .

Now ,they are facing a “logistics shock” that is impacting global supply chains, increasing energy prices, and challenging the financial stability of our SMEs.

While many responsible governments are already implementing support measures to their struggling SMEs, here we are having to witness the sorry state of a meek President of the SME Chamber lamenting on the lack of response from the authorities and begging for help from the Ministry of Finance “pou nou accorder un soutien dans les plus brefs délais” (sic)

A dedicated Homefront Crisis Ministerial Committee has been formed to ensure supply chain stability for firms.

𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚: The government is proactively formulating relief measures, including reducing import duties and providing financial support for export-related shipping costs for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) to combat rising costs.

𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐲: Due to its close trade ties with the region and susceptibility to currency volatility, the central bank has taken steps to stabilize financial markets, which directly impacts local SMEs.

𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 & 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: As logistical hubs and trading partners reliant on imports, nations in East Africa are exploring coordinated fuel procurement and emergency support, as supply chain disruptions affect agricultural and small business inputs.

𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭 & 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧: Considered highly vulnerable, these nations are grappling with rising fuel prices and potential disruption in investment, requiring government intervention to prevent SMEs from collapsing, according to UN/IMF assessments.

Pakistan: Due to its high dependence on energy imports through the affected region, Pakistan is experiencing economic strain that necessitates protective measures for small businesses.

𝐒𝐮𝐛-𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: While also affected by price shocks, countries in this region are increasingly utilizing blended finance and technical assistance to support SMEs that face capital constraints.

You can’t expect much from our Minister of the Ministry of Industry, SME and Cooperatives ,he must be busy catching fish !
