𝐋𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐝’𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐤 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐧 !!!

While other members of the Govt are unhappy about the pension reform , Ashok Subron. the Minister for Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, is welcoming the pension reform announced in the 2026–2027 Budget, stating that it is in line with the principles of solidarity and social justice. (sic)

Ashok Subron believes that this approach aims to better target state aid towards those who need it most. “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦,” he argues, adding that the mechanism is modelled on the targeting mechanism used for the CSG.

Prior to his appointment as minister, Ashok Subron, the Activist, the Trade Union leader and leader of his left-wing, eco-socialist political party , Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA), had criticised several specific policies and structural reforms as active "dismantling" or targeting of the Mauritian welfare state (l’État-providence).

A.Subron repeatedly fought against the proposals by international bodies (like the World Bank and IMF) and local right-wing politicians to introduce "ciblage" (targeting/means-testing) for the Basic Retirement Pension (BRP).

Interestingly , very relevant to the present context, he had warned us that “ by starving the state of corporate tax revenue( 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒂𝒙𝒆𝒔), the government was creating an artificial deficit and this deficit would inevitably be used by neoliberal policymakers as an excuse to impose austerity and slash public spending on welfare.”
