Yes, the FMP or the MMM are reaping what they started sowing in the late 1970s, a period that culminated in the adoption of the “New Social Consensus” or “Scientific Communalism” , the calculated strategy used by the Mauritian Militant Movement to ethnically balance candidate tickets and power-sharing arrangements. Rather than erasing ethnic divides, it has largely essentialised and frozen cultural differences, rendering the structure rigid and resistant to change. It institutionalised and perpetuated communalism by treating ethnicity as a permanent political blueprint.
But what they did not bargain for was that it was not the leaders but the followers that ultimately drove the narrative guided by their own identity politics, polarised in a rhetoric of victimisation entitled to reparation and redress. It was not a call for reform of the system, for a sharing of the fruits of progress, for more meritocracy , for inclusive institutions that are accessible to all (or most) citizens and do not favor a narrow group of elites, cronies and community over the rest of society. It was a question of us against them. Their new social consensus or scientific communalism or identity politics...,however u may name it, altered the terms of the political discourse and made such inroads in the Mauritian psyche that it will now take us years before we can give real meaning to our "Viv Ensam " and take responsibility for the healing our fragmented beautiful small country.
Their approach has accentuated communalism in Mauritius in several specific ways:

This institutionalized communalism by forcing the state to rely on official ethnic declarations to ensure parliamentary balance.
๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐: The reliance on communal mathematics prevented the transition to non-ethnic or class-based politics, keeping Mauritius locked in traditional communal voting patterns. It has been argued that the approach ultimately served as an ideological compromise, sacrificing the promise of a united Mauritian identity for electoral utility.
Critics, such as the LALIT Movement, have long argued that as long as political parties continue to use ethnic engineering, the ideology of division will overshadow true national integration.
