Teachers should be seen as as carriers of "emancipatory education"

Teachers should be seen as as carriers of emancipatory education"
"Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. — Kahlil Gibran"
A friend sent me this interesting article by Avijit Pathak,Professor of Sociology at JNU, published in today’s Indian Express. He writes that ....."a teacher, far from being a cog in the bureaucratic machine, carries the lamp of truth, and walks with his/her students as wanderers and seekers to make sense of the world they live in, and free it from what belittles man. We must celebrate this pedagogy of hope."
In the context of the present debate on the“need for 5 credits to move on to the upper grade”, I thought it will be good to remind ourselves of the main purpose of our education system -especially our elitist education system that is failing us all -even our elite.
Perhaps this article can help in providing our education planners with some insights on some of the basic elements of an appropriate education and training system to a) succeed in our reform programme b ) inspire them to be sufficiently visionary in our current reform plan to realize our ambitions and c) generate the level of skills and social cohesion necessary to build a strong and more cohesive Mauritian society to stand up to future challenges.
