....every taxpayer, every Mauritian, every Lepep, in his right mind, believes that it is time to put a stop to this recurrent saga of scandals spanning from unauthorized slush funds in the early 2000s to modern-day fleet mismanagement, bribery probes, and allegations of criminal conspiracies that have stripped the airline of billions of rupees.
These very politically-picked ones, these very corrupt ones
-who had caused the the haemorrhage of our “Paille-en-Queue” to turn it into mere “pailles”,
- who had benefited from famous “caisse noire” to the detriment of our national airline,
- who were kicked out by previous regimes for their incompetence and for other more hidden horrors that were emerging from the vaults but kept coming back no matter how often they are suspended,
-who were vegetating on the Board of directors and responsible for the hedging saga,
- who were guilty of approving the policies that were against the best interests of Air Mts,
-who have been interfering directly with the running of the Company
-who had proposed the Asia-Africa Corridor ,
-who did not raise their little fingers to put a stop to the mismanagement that was leading Air Mts to bankruptcy.
Why do we taxpayers have to continue to bear the cost of another doomed enterprise ? After the farce of the mega-structure -"Airport Holdings" , what next in terms of bogus solutions, of eternal internal restructuring , of "Game Changer" plans ?
Why should we taxpayers continue to be the “ dindons de leur farce” ?
---Taxpayer-backed AHL converted Rs 8 billion of the airline's massive debt into preference shares to prevent total collapse, keeping public money heavily tied to the carrier.
---The airline accumulated over $170 million in losses between 2015 and 2024, coupled with a staggering Rs 1.2 billion lost in the recent Kroll report scandal.
---Persistent aircraft maintenance delays, constant groundings, and organizational mismanagement continue to impact regional flights and passenger satisfaction.
What is the solution ?
We are of the opinion that, perhaps, the way out is to push for a strategic partnership for Air Mauritius .
A strategic partnership for Air Mauritius may be beneficial via :
---Partnering with larger carriers allowing Air Mauritius to offer seamless codeshare flights across the globe, providing passengers with access to hundreds of destinations beyond its core routes.
---Collaborations with major airlines (such as the established partnership with Emirates) increasing inbound traffic to Mauritius, generating substantial economic value and supporting local jobs.
---Partnering which can improve governance, reduce operational costs, optimize fleet utilization, and improve bargaining power for aircraft maintenance and fuel purchasing.
---Joint procurement of fuel and shared maintenance costs lowering the airline's overhead. These operational savings are often passed down to travelers on long-haul routes. Partnering with a mega-carrier connects Air Mauritius to global hubs. More passengers sharing the total network cost creates downward pressure on base ticket prices.
We are being told that la “caisse vide” and having our welfare state dismantled year after year only to see public money systematically mismanaged. The state should no longer use public funds to subsidize corruption and institutional incompetence. The devastating findings of the independent forensic Kroll Audit have indeed shattered public trust in the carrier's so called "Game Changer” or turnaround plans .
Air Mts is unequivocally and has for too long been a financial burden on the Mauritian public and taxpayers.
