In this age of populist demagoguery, illiberal democracy, personalised autocracy and institutionalised despotism, we have seen it happening from Trump in the US, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Orban in Hungary ,PiS in Poland, Erdogan in Turkey, Modi in India, Khan and the military in Pakistan, Putin in Russia, Xi Jinpin in China ,Kagame in Rwanda…the dismantling of democratic institutions and civil rights .
Now it’s our turn under Pinokio’s spin dictatorship ; day by day our democracy is being battered and weakened; day by day it is collapsing. The National Assembly, the judiciary, the executive, the bureaucracy, the rule and implementation of the law have been corrupted and have become very controversial as these are repeatedly being drawn into partisan and conflicting positions.
The country is now caught in an institutional crisis . Our two institutions, the DPP and the Police which have been working together, in complementarity, for so many years , are now at each other’s throat and have drawn out their daggers . The decision of the Commissioner of Police (CP) to retain the services of private lawyers, upsets conventions and aggravates an already strained relationship with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
We have been seeing this coming , you recall the previous decision of the CP not to align itself with the position of the DPP concerning the release on bail of Bruneau Laurette, and the treatment by the police of the case of Yogida Sawmynaden in the 'Constituency Clerk' affair.
“The choice to prosecute a person in criminal proceedings and the text of the law under which the defendant will be prosecuted rests with the DPP. We cannot question that. Here, it is the CP that distances itself from the DPP, ”comments Me Rault.
This could have happened only under an autocracy, abetted by this populist authoritarian regime whose real goal, however, is to control the state apparatus and the economic and financial resources that will allow a “new elite” , “Nou Ban”- from all communities but adhering to a blind faith in the leader as a symbol of change to be created for their benefits.
That’s how appealing to the raw impulses of people, they maximize control over their behavior and thus increase the scope of their power. They also know how to use the element of fear and the threat of repressive violence to supress dissent and undermine support for democracy while increasing support for autocracy.
